As of December 31, 2011, the U.S. Department of the Treasury is changing the way you buy U.S. Savings Bonds. They will no longer be sold at financial institutions or through mail order. Instead, you can purchase them safely online through their website: Treasury Direct.
Existing paper U.S. Savings Bonds are still valid and will continue to earn interest 30 years from the issue date or until redeemed and may be redeemed at any office.
To purchase a paperless savings bond, open a free Treasury Direct account today and:
- buy, manage and redeem electronic savings bonds
- convert paper bonds to electronic
- purchase electronic savings bonds as gifts
- purchase other Treasury securities
